Bargaining in China: where it works and how to do it

Haggling is expected at street and tourist markets and small independent shops — but not in malls, supermarkets, or chain stores with fixed prices. Start well below the asking price (often a third), stay friendly and smiling, and be ready to walk away. At tourist and fake-goods markets the first price can be many times the fair price.
